Mission Statement
CTVR will establish an international leadership position in industry-guided research that redefines key elements of telecommunications systems, architectures and networks. It will leverage this leadership position to contribute to the scientific, commercial and educational infrastructure of Ireland.
-
CTVR's principal goal is to engage in world-leading, breakthrough research in areas in the domain of telecommunications, with particular emphasis on the economic context and value-chain impact of that research.
-
Scientific and technical excellence is paramount and CTVR will demonstrate this excellence through the production of publications in international journals and conferences and through the filing of patents.
-
The Centre maintains strong links with industry to inspire and guide its research activities, to work together on problems identified and also to act as a path to market for its research output.
-
CTVR is committed to achieving the commercial exploitation of its research output to the benefit of its industrial and academic partners and to the Irish economy. It will achieve this through its major industrial partners, through licensing and through the formation of spin-out companies.
-
CTVR is an inter-disciplinary effort involving multiple universities and research institutes. New insights are expected from the interactions between network architecture research, equipment-focused research in the areas of photonics and RF subsystems, and process-focused research in areas such as optimisation and test and reliability.
-
Ireland's evolution towards a knowledge economy is critically dependent on the creation and replenishment of a cohort of highly skilled researchers capable of driving innovation in key technology areas. CTVR is committed to contributing to the development of this human capital through its schools outreach programme and by making a strong impact on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in its partner institutions.
-
CTVR was created as part of an Irish Government initiative with full backing from IDA Ireland – the state agency responsible for managing foreign direct investment in Ireland – and Science Foundation Ireland, which is charged with the development of Irish scientific and engineering research. We can thus harness the full resources of these organisations to assist with new initiatives undertaken by the centre.
What makes CTVR unique
Our Centre couples telecommunications technology specialists with experts in constraint-based programming, modelling and optimisation techniques that will moderate each and every design decision. Promising architectures can be modelled to determine whether they can in fact be realised in the cost-effective manner that will be crucial to their success. Innovations in radio and optical components will be proceeded with or discarded based on their manufacturability, reliability and contribution to overall system cost.
